Our Story

By reducing pet overpopulation it will reduce pet euthanasia at animal shelters. Spay today, save lives tomorrow.

Our HistorY

In 2001, Spay4LA and the Coalition for Pets and Public Safety implemented the first mobile spay and neuter clinic in Los Angeles.

Together, both organizations have spayed and neutered over 350,000 dogs and cats throughout low-income communities of Los Angeles, including South LA, Compton, Watts, and East LA.

Erika Brunson and Pam Wilkinson worked as a determined team from 1999 to 2022. When Erika passed away in 2022, she passed the baton to Pam, who continues the mission with the same passion they shared in 1999, a time when over 100,000 dogs and cats were euthanized annually in both county and city shelters.

Before COVID, the duo helped reduce shelter intake and euthanasia by approximately 80%. However, intake and euthanasia rates rose again after COVID, likely due to other spay and neuter clinics ceasing operations during the pandemic and overcharging afterward. Despite these challenges, Spay4LA continued its operations by implementing new COVID protocols and maintaining its commitment to providing low-cost services.COVID, yet Spay4LA continued operations creating new COVID protocol, and has remained low cost.

Our Mission

Spay4LA’s mission is to curb pet overpopulation in low-income areas, where it is financially challenging for pet owners to pay for spay and neuter services. We strive to achieve this goal by assisting low- and no-income pet guardians who could not otherwise afford to spay or neuter their pets. Our efforts also focus on community cats residing in low-income areas.

HOW WE ACHIEVE OUR MISSION

  • Using Los Angeles County and City Vouchers to assist low-income pet gaurdians.

  • Increasing pet adoption and fostering rates.

  • Enhancing pet owner education, including:
-The importance of Pet ID’s/pet collars.
    -Microchipping and maintenance.
-The importance to keep cats indoors, especially until they are spayed or neutered. Keeping them indoors helps prevent unplanned pregnancies and reduces the risk of them encountering dangers like traffic, predators, or diseases.

OUR RESULTS

Spay4LA is currently the most productive mobile spay and neuter clinic in Los Angeles.

Spay4LA continues to work with the community to reduce shelter intake and euthanasia rates. Euthanasia should not be considered an acceptable way of controlling pet overpopulation, and we are committed to making a lasting impact.
